When it comes to food in Cambodia, there’s one fruit that sparks curiosity, excitement, and sometimes debate — durian. Known locally as the "King of Fruits," durian is loved for its creamy texture and bold aroma. If you’re planning your trip and looking for authentic things to do in Cambodia, tasting durian should be high on your list.
We know many people coming from outside of Asia and they have no idea what this fruit is. Many people find the smell unbearable, many compare it to cat’s poop. But if you give it three tries, you might start to like it.
When to try Durians
May and June are the best months to try this fruit. People in Cambodia are currently finding the best place to eat this. It’s available everywhere, but finding the good ones is hard. There are many cases where durians are imported from Vietnam and Thailand, you don’t want to try those. We might be biased, but the ones that grow in Cambodia are superior. This could be that the ones imported are the cheap ones with high use of chemicals.
How much are durians?
Price varies depending on the place, time and quality. It’s hard for us to estimate how much it is, maybe around $15? Yes, it’s kinda pricey.
We encourage you to try durian at least once when you’re in Cambodia if you’re in the season for it. If you’re in the country now (May), you wouldn't miss it, it’s everywhere!
Let us know if you try and how you like it.
